  • Archival history
MERL ‘Associated information’ form – 'Toy Cart // Bought in Exeter about 1938 at a sale of goods in an old house. The broken axle was replaced by oak from the old Exe Bridge at Bountess Weir. // Meant to be a hay cart, can be tipped, and the back removed.', Letter, Miss Harvie to MERL, 25th September 1956 - 'I have read with interest the article in the September Geographical Magazine on Farm Carts & Waggons, + note that you would like to receive information of any surviving examples. // I am afraid I cannot offer to tell you of a full sized cart, but some time ago I bought at a sale a perfect little model of an old farm cart, evidently built for a child. It is very like the picture of the 1893-4 cart for carrying hay, with a tip-back. // It has broad wheels with metal binding... // It has on the front:- C. E. T. + Co. Contractors - presumably to make it look real to the owner. // Originally there was a fine model of a cart horse with it, but alas, that was blown up in the blitz.'
