    These scales are designed to weigh letters to determine their weight and the cost of postage. They consist of a central sprung stem on a round base, with a round platform on which the letter is rested. The scale in the centre of the stem shows the weight in ounces and cost in pence. The scales were made between 1850 and 1871.
