  • Archival history
MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This is a girdle plate of a type first used in the 18th century and still used in the North in house with open fires. They were used for baking oatcakes, scones and cakes. If they had a half-hoop handle, they were attached to a pivot-hook over the fire, if not, they stood on a brandreth on the down hearth. This girdle consists of a solid round plate of iron 15 inches in diameter, with a half-hoop handle surmounted by a ring for hanging up. The handle can be pushed down when the girdle is not in use as it is fastened to the pan by a bolt on which it swivels. When upright, the handle is held in place by a loose iron band which slips over the joint. // The girdle is 11 inches in height to the top of the handle. It was used at Papplewick Hall, Nottingham from 1860 onwards and from 1916 at Goldwell, Newbury, Berkshire.'
