    This is a glazed porcelain jar for the storage of 'Horner's Devonshire Clotted Cream'. Storage instructions and details of where to purchase Devonshire Clotted Cream and its health benefits are printed on the jar in purple. Jars like this were probably made in the Potteries of Stoke-on-Trent and would have cost about 15/- for a gross (144 jars).

    MERL ‘Associated information’ form – Porcelain cream jar with following in purple. // '1. Horner’s Devonshire Clotted Cream. Horner’s Cream Cheese can generally be procured when this is sold. Established 1848. // 2. Anyone using this jar for trade purposes will be prosecuted. // 3. Devonshire Clotted Cream. For used with tarts, stewed fruit etc. it is unrivalled, and to coffee, cocoa and chocolate it puts a richness and flavour unapproachable. Children and persons requiring a nutritive diet are by its free use greatly benefitted, while as a rival to cod liver oil, and in cases of [?] and consumption it is highly commended and prescribed by the medical profession. // Entered at Stationers Hall // 4. To be kept dry and cool, not on ice or it turns fusty.''
