Description
A tobacco box with lid. Inside is a plate which could be pressed down to form a comparatively airtight compartment to keep the tobacco dry.
This is an octagonal iron tobacco box with a lid with a brass handle. Inside the box is an octagonal pewter plate with a brass handle which could be pressed down on to the tobacco to for a comparatively airtight compartment to keep the tobacco dry.

Archival history
MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This heavy iron tobacco box has eight sides, two sides measure 3 inches in length and the other six sides are 1.5 inches each. The length of the box base is 6 inches and its width 4.5 inches. The box stands 6 inches high when the lid is on, and the lid has a small brass handle decorated with scrolls. The box has an eight sided pewter plate with a brass handle which could be pressed down on to the tobacco to keep it dry and comparatively straight.'
