An auger is a boring tool used in a variety of woodworking trades to bore long deep holes. It consists of an iron shank with a T-shaped handle at one end and a boring device at the other. This auger is very slender, has a corkscrew end and, unusally, a rounded shank. It is missing its handle. It was used by John Francis of Stoke Row, Oxfordshire, who was either the donor's father or grandfather.
