Candle snuffer, c. late 18th/early 19th C. Known as a 'douter' similar to snuffers, it does not have cutting blade or box to catch the wick.
This is a candle snuffer, thought to date from the late 18th or early 19th century. It is a snuffer of the type known as a 'douter' - this is similar to other snuffers, except that it does not have cutting blades or a box in which to catch the wick. It was formerly part of the collections at the Victoria & Albert Museum, but nothing is known of its origins before that.
