This elaborately finished marking gauge was used by the donor's father, a wheelwright in Braishfield, Hampshire. It consists of a square ebony stick, with a brass strip fitted to the centre, marked off in inches and sixteenths. Underneath them are two marking points; the arm fixed and the other adjustable by sliding the brass slide when it is fixed. The perforated sliding block is made of brass, and may be made immovable by screwing the small brass screw at the top. The block is oval in shape, and is stamped 'H.J. Bown'.
