  • Description
    Malt scoop, part of a collection of malthouse equipment. The brewhouse was on a farm at Great Cornard, Suffolk until 1932.
    This malt scoop is part of a complete collection of malthouse equipment (used for making beer) owned by the donor's father. The brewhouse was situated on a farm at Great Cornard, Suffolk, and was used for home brewing only. Beer was made there for the last time in 1932. A rough wooden handle fits into a metal socket attached by bolts to a deep bowl made of wrought iron. The iron was originally lacquered with copper, presumably in order that the beer should not have the taste of iron, but the copper is now almost totally worn off.

    1 malt scoop: wood; metal (wrought iron, copper); wornThe bottom of the bowl has a number of small tonges of metal around its edges which have been soldered onto the sides. The handle is fastened to the bowl by three long arms, two of which clasp the sides and the third passes down across the bottom.
