Description
This oak stitching clamp originally came from Snowdonia in North Wales. The clamp acts as a vice into which a saddler would insert a piece of harness for stitching. He would hold the clamp between his knees as he sewed to maintain the pressure on the work.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This stitching clamp came originally from Snowdonia in North Wales and was given to Mr. Massingham by Mr. Harold Greening of Winchcomb [sic] (Glos.). // It is made of a piece of flat oak split to within 12 inches of the butt and with the two cleft pieces bent so that they meet again at the top to form a vice. The saddler pulled the vice apart and inserted a piece of harness for stitching. He held the clamp between his knees as he sewed to maintain the pressure on his work.
