Description
Circular metal nameplate with a raised rim and two holes for fixing. It bears the inscription 'Brown and May Ltd // England // Makers Devizes // No 6850'. The plate was found in a farmers field whilst metal detectoring. It is from a portable steam engine dating from 1902.

Email Donor to The MERL, 13 November 2012 - 'It was found in a farmers field in Frampton Cotteral, I assumed it was off some type of Agricultural Machinery though I couldn't be sure of that.', Email Donor to The MERL, 26 November 2020 - 'The land owner was more than happy for it to go to the museum.', MERL Object Entry Form - 'Description of object/collection - Brown and May maker's plate. Found in a farmer's field whilst metal detectoring in 2012. When found it was bent in half, probably by a plough. Straightened out now. The land owner is happy for it to go to a museum. It is off a water wagon., Email MERL to Alan Rundle, 13 July 2023 - '[...] The Brown and May plate is off a portable steam engine dating from 1902. Unfortunately the order book for that period are missing so I cannot say who it was sold to, or what size engine it was.'
