They were made or used by her and her family, who originate from Somerset and Wiltshire. - 1 cotton bodice with crochet yoke, Early Edwardian. - 2 Small wooden chairs and small table, made by Great Grandfather Frederick Fare. Builder and Cabinet maker, living in Bath in late 1800s and early 1900s. - 5 stones from '5 stones' game. Channer, Allied Arts and Crafts (Teacher's handbook), Torchon Lace.', MERL Miscellaneous note - 'In the nineteenth century crochet was added to garments as a cheap substitute for lace. Decorative lace was very complicated to make and was produced by skilled makers. Crochet work is produced using a hooked needle and thick thread. The finished product is less delicate than lace, but still produces a netted decorative pattern. Crochet rapidly grew in popularity in the nineteenth century.
