Medal in presentation box for success in clean milk competitions. The medal was awarded by Hornby and Clark in 1935-36 to Robert George Mundy, the donor’s father. He farmed at Kiln Farm, Mattingley, Hampshire. Clean milk competitions occurred during 1920s and 1930s to encourage more hygienic milk production. Robert Munday’s success was encouraged by Hornby and Clarke Ltd, an independent dairy business who bought milk in from farms in the southeast of England, which advertised certified milk and supervised cows. The medal was made by Mappin and Webb features a cow on the front and is stamped on the reverse ‘Commended // Class A // Mr R G Munday’.

Whilst they originally had cows in London, they also bought milk in from farms in the southeast of England. The company Hornby & Clark was formed in 1917 from two dairy businesses; F & H E Hornby and the newly dissolved J. Clarke and Sons (the founder Josiah Clarke died 12th June 1917). The company was taken over by Express Dairies in 1960.
