    This is a date stone that was situated in the chimney stack of a pair of cottages on the Horsecroft, Stanford in the Vale. The cottages were demolished in 1934 and the donor saved the date stone. It is inscribed 'R B // 1691', marking the date that the cottages were constructed.

    MERL ‘Associated information’ form – ‘Name of Object: // Age…: // Name and address of present owner: // Description of use to which it was put…:’This is a date stone that was in a chimney stack of a pair of cottages at the Horsecroft, Stanford-in-the-Vale, Berks. // The two cottages were numbers 90 + 91 in the Farringdon E.D.C's list of cottages recommended for demolition, this recommendation made in about 1933. The cottages were demolished shortly after March 1934. // Mr Willcocks made enquiries from the builders after the cottages had been pulled down + no one wanted the date stone so he collected it + has had it until he gave it to the museum.'
