    This lathe tool is a smoothing chisel with both sides of the blade sharpened. The shank is stamped with 'Moulson Brothers, Cast Steel', and it was used at R. Middleton & Sons' wheelwrights workshop in Eddington, Hungerford.

    MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This lathe tool from the wheelwright’s shop at Hungerford, is a smoothing chisel, with both sides of the blade sharpened. The blade itself is .45 inches wide, and the parallel sides of the shank are 2.5 inches long, before they gradually narrow into the metal stem, 1.9 inches long. The stem is hafted into the wooden handle 7.5 inches long and is kept in place by a brass ring .8 inches broad. The shank is stamped ‘Moulson Brothers, Cast Steel’. // See also 51/109M.'
