    This mortising chisel was used by the donor's father, who was a wheelwright and carpenter in Braishfield, Hampshire. Mortising chisels were used to create mortises (slots in wood to form parts of joints). It is a heavy chisel with a socketed handle, which is now broken, and a steel shank with a cutting edge of 0.5 inches in width.
