    These small callipers were used by a wheelwright in Writtle, Essex. Wheelwrights used callipers to measure out the nave, or 'hub', of a wheel when turning it on a lathe. These callipers were also used by the wheelwright's father and grandfather, both of whom had also been wheelwrights in the same village.
