    A brace is a 'D'-shaped woodworking hand tool used for boring holes. This brace has a shell bit, which has a gouge-shaped nose and body. They were used by the donor, a wheelwright, and also by his father and grandfather, both of whom had also been wheelwrights in Writtle, Essex.
