This shell auger, a wood-boring tool, was used in a wheelwright's shop in Writtle, Essex. Shell augers are designed so that part of the auger bores the bottom of the hole, and the other part holds the shavings that are removed as the hole is bored. This shell auger was also used by the wheelwright's father and grandfather, both of whom had also been wheelwrights in the same village. It is stamped 'J. HOWARTH SHEFFIELD'.
