5 willow rods of salix triandra or ‘black maul’. Grown by Tom Ellison, in Evesham, Worcestershire, for making willow rattles.
These five willow rods are of the variety salix triandra or ‘black maul’. They were grown by Tom Ellison, a basketmaker in Evesham, Worcestershire, who used them for making willow rattles and grew the willow by his shop. This variety makes up 75% of the output of Somerset. It usually grows 5–7 feet in length, but the soil and situation may have produced these short rods.
