    This garden roller was used for rolling lawns. It was used and probably made by a stone worker on the edge of the Cotswolds. It was probably made in about 1800.

    Garden roller. Garden Rollers were used c.1800 to roll lawns, to flatten topsoil or to even out bumpy lawns. It was thought to have been made by a stone worker from the edge of the Cotswolds and when the MERL acquired it in 1953 it was already around 150 years old.

    MERL miscellaneous note - 'For rolling lawns used by a worker in stone on the edge of the Cotswolds possibly it was hewn out by him. This man died 26 years ago aged 90.'
