  • Description
A ploughshare probably from the 19th C. from a locally-made plough. Ploughed up in a field not previously been ploughed for many years.
This socket on this cast iron ploughshare suggests that it was fixed to a metal mouldboard and frame. It was probably a 19th century share from a locally-made plough. It was ploughed up in a field which had not previously been ploughed for many years.
  • Physical description
1 Ploughshare: metal (iron); good condition
  • Archival history
MERL miscellaneous note - 'The cast iron share with a socket is unusual, though we have seen wrought iron shares of a similar type. From the hole on the topside it would seem that the mouldboard had a loose metal shin of the type used on ploughs with wooden mouldboards, but such shins were also found on iron mouldboard ploughs. The method of fixing of the share suggests a metal mouldboard and frame. It has had remarkably little wear. It is probably a late 19th Century share from a local make of plough. This share was ploughed up in a field with others. The field known not to have been ploughed for many years.'
