  • Description
A heavy mattock or 'tubble', was used in West Cornwall to break up the soil. The tip of the tool is rounded after years of use.
This heavy mattock, known locally as a 'tubble', was used in West Cornwall to break up the soil. The flat end was used to dig up the loose soil, while the hammer was used to break up the many boulders embedded in it. The soils of West Cornwall are in general very shallow and characterised by the presence of a large number of stones and boulders, due to the fact that it has been derived from the hard granite mass of St. Just, so the tip of this tool is rounded after years of use.
