    This candle holder is made of wrought iron and would be suspended from the ceiling or a hook on the wall. The height of the candle can be adjusted by the ratchet. It dates from the eighteenth century.

    MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This is an adjustable candle holder made for suspension from the ceiling or from a hook on the wall. By means of the ratchet the height of the candle can be adjusted up and down about 12 inches. // The holder is made of wrought iron and is rather beautifully decorated. When held in the bottom notch the holder is 20.75 inches long.', Victoria & Albert Museum No. M47, 1909.
