Miscellaneous note, Rosemary Meakins – ‘STRAW PLAITING SCHOOL IN ESSEX // by // GEORGE WASHINGTON BROWNLOW, 1835–1876. // The artist was born in Gateshead and educated by William Bell Scott at the Government School of Design in Newcastle. His work attracted the attention of his future patron, the Rev. J. St. Clere Raymond, who had inherited Belchamp Hall, Belchamp Walter in Essex, and Brownlow was invited to live in the village. // He loved to paint children at work and play, and this picture is almost certainly of the village children in Belchamp Walter. It was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1865, and painted in 1858. // There are original paintings by Brownlow on the pulpit at Belchamp Walter. He was laid to rest in the churchyard there and the village children scattered his grave with flowers. // Research by Rosemary J.D.
