  • Description
Grease box used by carpenters to store grease used to grease screws, to prevent their rusting into the wood. From Black Torrington, Devon.
This type of grease box was used by carpenters to store grease used to grease screws before using them, to prevent their rusting into the wood. This particular grease box was found in the donor's home at Black Torrington, Devon. The donor did not know what the box was when she first found it. It has a long spout and handle and no lid, so resembles a jug more closely than a box; the long spout was probably used for pouring the grease when required.
