Description
This hummelling tool stamped onto the barley spread on the floor to knock off the awns. Unknown origins.
This origin of this grid type barley awner is not known. Its frame is almost square, and has five blades. The majority of its wooden handle has broken off. After threshing barley is then hummelled to remove the short lengths of awn still attached to the grain. This hummelling tool stamped onto the barley spread on the floor to knock off the awns.

At the centre of each side an iron rod is bolted. These rods curve upwards, pass through a ring and into a socket over the centre of the awner. // 7 inches of wooden handle still project from the socket but the remainder has been broken off. // The frame measures 11.3 by 11.7 inches and the awner is 9.2 inches in height to the top of the socket. // See also 51/462‘
