About 1660 a branch of the Englefield Family came into the estate at White Knights. Anthony Englefield senior, who was buried at Englefield in 1667, is the only name of that family mentioned in the Register to have been of White Knights. // The grounds were laid out by the late Sir Henry Englefield in the style of an ornamental Farm, with great taste. - William Ryan Martin Esquire the late possessor of this estate spared nothing that might render it both elegant and commodious; and it must be confessed the additions and improvements which he made, were such as only a refined taste could suggest. He considerably enlarged the house, by building two additional rooms; and made many other divisions in it which no less contributed to its improvement; he embellished the grounds by adding an expansive sheet of water, and turning over it an elegant and highly finished stone bridge, consisting of three arches (the whole of which it is much lamented, it was not possible to exhibit in the point of view in which the house is taken. The estate has lately been purchased by the Most Noble the Marquis of Blandford who is forming a botanical garden upon an extensive scale; and we make no doubt but the taste of the present noble possessor will render this seat one of the most compact and eligible situations in the kingdom.'
