    A black shawl with delicate open work and tassles around the border. It belonged to the donor's grandmother who spent her life in Lancashire, at Bury, Barrowford and at Colne.
  • Archival history
    MERL 'Handwritten accession' form (Museum of English Rural Life): "This shawl was worn by the donor’s grandmother, Ellen Anne Brookes (nee Hayhurst or Hurst). She was the daughter of a blacksmith and was in or near Bury, Lancs. c. 1846. She married William Brooks who was a loom worker in a cotton mill. They lived in Bury, later in Barrowford, near Colne, and she spent her later life as a widow in Colne where she died aged 85 in 1933."
