Label Text
Butter churn, early-twentieth century. Churns of this sort were called ‘barrel’ or ‘end-over-end’ churns. These names explain how such machines worked. The handle was cranked to turn the barrel-shaped section, which contained the milk. This action produced the butter. The operator of these devices was almost always female and normally in the employ of a large country house or a commercial dairy. MERL 78/25.
