  • Description
These children's shoes were found in a fifteenth-century farmhouse at Great Folly Farm, Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, at the time of its demolition. They were in an attic which had been sealed off in around 1800. At the time of acquisition it was suspected that the attic room had been a child's bedroom. However, it seems more likely that these were deliberately dposited in the attic as an apotropaic device to protect the home. They are made entirely of leather and are hand-stitched. They have a tongue at the front but it is impossible to see how they were fastened because of their condition.
