  • Description
This thatcher's mallet was made for the thatching exhibit at the Festival of Britain in 1951. Mallets are used for driving the spars into the thatch. The spars, also known as 'spicks', serve either to pin the straw or to fasten the tie, which may be twine, straw rope or split wood, to the thatch. Rick thatchers use their own gloved hands for this operation instead of a mallet.
