  • Description
    A compass plane, a tool commonly used by shipwrights. This example is made of cast iron with a metal sole which is adjustable from convex through horizontal to concave by means of thumb screws at the front and back (usually a compass plane has a fixed sole with a convex surface). The blade can also be adjusted by means of a thumb screw. The plane is stamped 'Bailey Patent Dec. 24 1867' and ' Baileys Patent Aug 31 1858-Aug 1867'. It was given to the donor by her local builder.
