A rebate plane is used for cutting a rebate, or step, along the edge of a piece of wood. This plane has a wooden stock and a blade which is set askew, with the fence in a down-step of the sole. It is marked 'W. Greenslade, Bristol // Exhibition Medlas, London & Dublin' and also 'H. Miles' in four places. The donor purchased it from a carpenter and wheelwright from Vernham Dean, Wiltshire, who died in 1906 and whose family had been wheelwrights for several generations.
