Description
Flower or ‘walking' basket, carried by girls in annual Whitsuntide walks of Sunday school children of all denominations.
Flower baskets such as this, known as ‘walking baskets’, were carried by small girls in annual Whitsuntide walks of Sunday school children of all denominations – a tradition in the north-west of England. The baskets would be filled with flowers on a foundation of moss. This flower basket was used by the donor’s daughter in Stockport in the 1930s. It is shaped like a small Gainsborough florist’s basket made of cane and with a willow handle.
