    Carter's whip made of closely woven catgut covering another material. There was a custom for carters to add a ferrule for each year of service.
    The origin of this carter's whip is unknown. It is made of closely woven catgut covering another material, probably ash, with a brass-bound end and seven brass ferrules (metal rings to reinforce the whip-stock and prevent it splitting). There was once a custom for carters and waggoners to add a ferrule for each year of service.

    MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'The origin of this carter’s whip is unknown. It is made of closely woven catgut surrounding some tough, yet flexible material which is probably an ash stick. It was once a custom for caters and waggoners to ring a brass ferrule on the stock for each year of service.
