This is a trying plane, used for producing straight edges on wooden boards. It was made by Greenslade of Bristol and originally acquired by A. L. Elliott, of Messrs. Samuel Elliott & Sons of Caversham, in 1905. It was given to H. C. Longhurst, of Reading, in 1930, whilst he carried out his apprenticeship at that firm.

MERL miscellaneous note – 'TRYING PLANE // Donor: H. C. Longhurst... Reading // This plane was acquired by A. L. Elliott in about 1905. Mr. Elliot was a director of the firm, Messrs. Samuel Elliott & Sons of Caversham, and a grandson of the founder. The plane was given to H. C. Longhurst in about 1930 during his apprenticeship with that firm. // The plane, 22" long and made of beech, was used for producing straight edges to boards, and so on. It was made by Greenslade of Bristol.
