  • Archival history
MERL Miscellaneous note – ‘Level presented by Mr James – caravan – Theale. We have his address from a former presentation of material. // Level made by his great grandfather probably just before 1840. Name John James – a shopkeeper at Ufton. (Checked with gazetteer and still going strong in 1868). Apparently he could make most things and did a lot of spare time work in the local blacksmith’s shop. Made all his own tools (check with former lot as they may be some of his also). // Great grandfather got married in the year that the GWR [Great Western Railway] came to Reading – had to take his London bride by horse drawn vehicle the rest of the way. JWA [John W. Anstee]. // John James was shopkeeper at Upton not Ufton (see Kelly’s directory) JSC 15/10/75’
