History of Sewing. During World War Two, a lack of availability of new clothes meant that sewing was a vital skill. Lots of people sewed clothes but it also had other practical uses. You can see examples of this in this display, such as men sewing wheat bags, and a button and thread that belonged to a soldier during the First World War. 81/36; 2016/6; LADYBIRD COLLECTION -- 633/10; D 89/6/3; P FW PH2/267/2; 63/197.
