Two 'roughing studs' were for inserting into horseshoes to improve the foothold of horses in icy conditions.
These two metal 'roughing studs' were for inserting into horseshoes to improve the foothold of horses in icy conditions. Each stud has a screw thread at one end and a wedge shape at the other. When the horses were shod in winter, a couple of holes were tapped in the shoe and the studs were inserted when the roads became icy.
