  • Archival history
MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This was given to Mr. Massingham by Mr. Harold G. Greening of Winchcombe, Glos. The steelyard is a weighing machine which is simple and yet has a good weight range. It is rarely seen in use today. // To use it, it is necessary to suspend it by the top single hook and the object to be weighed is hung on the double hook at the bottom. Balance is achieved by sliding the bob along the arm. The scale is graduated up to 7lb. By turning the scale over, reversing the double hook and suspending the steelyard from the hook furthest away from the arm, weights from 6lb. to 26lb. can be recorded. // The steelyard is in working order. It is 13 3/8” long and weighs 21/4 lb. [insert] The Antique Metalware Society, during a visit in June 2002, suggested this was made by E. Whitfield & Sons. WAP 27.6.02 [end insert].', MERL list / description [Massingham Collection, October 1989] – 'ACC. NO.: 51/202 // NAME: STEELYARD // NEG NO.: 35/118 // STORAGE: '
