    Lavinia Smith acquired these scales, of the spring balance type, from Frank Stibbs, a builder of East Hendred, Oxfordshire. Each side has a graduated scale - one side is marked in forties to 400lbs and on the other is marked in fives to 40lbs.

    MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'Miss Smith obtained these scales from Mr. Frank Stibbs, a builder, of East Hendred, Berks. // The scales are similar in design and principle to 51/249M. The graduated scale, however, is slightly different, for the one side is graduated 20, 40 and thence in forties up to a maximum of 400 lbs, while the other side is marked in fives up to 40 lbs. The total length of the instrument is 10.6 inches while the greatest width of the central ring is 3.2 inches. // See also 51/294.', Lavinia Smith Catalogue (D60/28) - 'A list of the contents of the East Hendred museum.
