MERL miscellaneous note – 'Two anvil swages 62/343-344 // One nail heading tool 62/345 // One anvil tool for flattening 62/346 // All from the blacksmiths shop at Messrs Wallace Bros, Whittle, Chelmsford, Essex. // All are substantially wrought iron and are probably no later than 1880. // ... Above business now abandoned. The wheelwright Wallace died in 1960 – work including undertaking etc still carried out by former apprentice... in a new business established 1960 on a site a few yards away.', MERL 'Handwritten catalogue' form – 'NAIL HEADER // See attached notes. // Used by blacksmith for putting heads on nails. Made from wrought iron, & is probably no later than 1880.'
