MERL 'Handwritten catalogue' form – 'VICE // from Mr Newton's carpenter's shop, West Knowle, Dulverton, Somerset.', MERL Catalogue Form (temporary) – 'Origin // Somerset, Dulverton // User // Mr. Newton // Carpenter // Notes // A heavy iron vice which has pincer like jaws. It is supported by a long rear extension and a forked front leg which would be bolted to the bench so that the vice would stand vertically. The jaws are tightened by means of a handle which works a screw. This vice would probably be attached to the side of a special bench and is used primarily by metal workers but is commonly found in woodworking shops.'
