Sources of income – 2018/19

The University derives its income from a number of sources.

Tuition fees make up the largest proportion of income accounting for 57% of total income. We charge tuition fees of £9,250 per annum to UK/Republic of Ireland undergraduates. We are also able to offer bursaries to students totalling around £2.4m.

Grants from funding bodies have reduced in recent years and now account for just 9% of our income.

The University has seen an increase in research funding and research activities resulting in nearly £39.4m income per annum. We also generated around £13.5m from endowments and investments.

The University derives income from a number of other sources including catering outlets, conferences, executive education, the SportsPark and from property holdings.

How we spend our money – 2018/2019

The University spent £157.5m during the year on its academic schools and academic services such as the Library and IT services.

We make strenuous efforts to keep costs under control, particularly the amount we spend on administration and central services. A significant part of our expenditure goes towards maintaining the buildings on our campuses.

Around 56% of the University's costs are staff and pension related.

Our overall expenditure increased to £391.5m in 2018/19. Staff costs rose due to increased investment in research activities, annual pay rises, and an increase of £59.9m in the staff pension provision.

Investing in our estate

The University aims to provide a high quality environment for its students and staff in which they can thrive. As well as maintaining the existing infrastructure, we believe it is important to invest in new first class teaching, research and non-academic facilities to ensure that we continue to be one of the leading universities in the UK and internationally. The Library refurbishment was completed in time for the 2019/20 academic year boasting much improved study and learning facilities as well as an open foyer space for hosting exhibitions. The magnificent new Health and Life Science facility is due to open by summer 2020. It will be a huge improvement to existing teaching and research facilities and will include a state of the art Bioresource Unit, to provide a world class home for the School of Biological Sciences and our Cole Museum of Zoology.
