Electrospun fibres

This may resemble a painting by Jackson Pollock, but it is actually an SEM micrograph of electrospun fibres, colourised using Photoshop. Electrospinning is a technique in which an electrical charge is used to draw very fine fibres from a liquid. Electrospun polymer fibres have potential applications in textiles, filtration, medicine and many other areas. The image was recorded by Muaathe Ibraheem, a Ph.D. student in the Chemistry Dept., working for Dr Fred Davis. The microscope used was EMLab's FEI Quanta, the magnification is 200x.
