Cernuella globuloidaea

This is an image of a Cernuella globuloidaea land snail shell from the Taforalt Cave archeological site in Morocco. In this cave an impressive land snail midden, with other anthropogenic refuses were excavated. The image depicts the apex (central area of the shell) and the first 3 whorls (coils) of the shell. The fine lines formed vertically on the whorls' growth, represent periods of inactivity. These fine lines tend to form closer in the beginning of the snails' life. Understanding the conditions and seasons under which these lines were formed provides further ideas about environmental condition in which the snail lived in. This also reveals seasonal environmental variations of the past. The image was captured by Amanpreet Kaur for the MSc dissertation of Faidra Katsi.
