The E. coli cells were treated with a sub-lethal concentration of a phytochemical (Thymol). The cell surface shows some 'corrugation' with evidence of several cells bursting at the apical end. This work is being undertaken by Fatemah AlKandari, a PhD student, under the supervision of Prof. Martin Woodward from the Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences.
