Image of the month

Gold nanoparticles

The image of the month for September 2011 shows gold nanoparticles imaged by high resolution TEM. The image has been captured by Dr Laura Felisari of CfAM in collaboration with Rajendran Vaiyapuri, a PhD student supervised by Dr Joanne Elliott of the School of Chemistry. The darker circular particles in the image are the gold nanoparticles. They are extremely small in size, just 10 millionths of a millimetre. These kinds of particles are particularly interesting because, after specific chemical treatments, they could be used in sensors to detect trace amounts of explosives and other compounds.

The image was one of the last ones taken by Laura, who has recently left CfAM to take up a post at the BP/Castrol Technology Centre in Pangbourne. We wish her every success in the future.
