Image of the month

Stem cells

This month's images are taken from work by Che Connon and colleagues of the School of Pharmacy, who are using stem cells to engineer human foetal membranes. Rupture of this membrane can result in the baby's death, but the material developed by Che's group could be used to repair ruptures, and thus save the pregnancy. The two images, taken using CfAM's FEI Quanta scanning electron microscope, show (A) epithelial cells on a tissue engineered foetal membrane and (B) cells on a normal foetal membrane. The appearance of both is similar, showing that the artificial membrane shares the same structural and functional properties as the real one.

This research has been reported in the national press, including the Sunday Express and the Daily Mail
